Root Canal Therapy

If decay reaches the innermost layer of the tooth, the pulp, root canal therapy will be required in order to restore the tooth. The infected pulp is removed, the space where it resided is thoroughly cleaned, shaped and disinfected and a rubber based filling material is packed within. A filling can then restore the tooth back to its original shape and function.

Commonly, back teeth which have had a root canal, are crowned in order to strengthen the tooth and prevent breaking. Historically, root canal treatments have a reputation of being painful, but today’s technology allows for a painless and efficient appointment. A root canal is just a long filling.
